Nigeria experienced another widespread power outage on Monday afternoon after the national electricity grid suffered a system failure, plunging homes and businesses across the country into darkness.
Data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) revealed that electricity generation fell sharply within one hour, dropping from about 2,052 megawatts at 2:00 p.m. to just 139.92 megawatts by 3:00 p.m.
The grid collapse severely affected power distribution nationwide, with only three of the country’s 11 electricity distribution companies able to take minimal load.
Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company recorded the highest allocation at 80 megawatts, while Abuja and Benin distribution companies received 20 megawatts each.

The remaining distribution companies, including Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt and Yola, were left without any power allocation.
The Nigerian National Grid confirmed the system disturbance, noting that efforts to restore supply were underway.
“Restoration in progress!” the NNG wrote on X.
As at the time of filing this report, the Transmission Company of Nigeria and the Federal Ministry of Power had yet to release any detailed explanation on the cause of the grid collapse.
