Boko Haram attacks military outpost in Born
Suspected fighters of Boko Haram launched an attack on a military outpost in Ajilari, on the outskirts of Maiduguri, in the early hours of Monday.
Sources said the terrorists struck the Ajilari Cross area at about 12:30 a.m., while another group simultaneously engaged troops at a military base in Baga.
Security sources indicated that the attackers infiltrated the area under the cover of darkness but were forced to retreat following a swift response by a joint team comprising the military, police, members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, and the Nigerian Air Force.
Spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, confirmed the incident, stating that security operatives had taken control of the situation.
“The suspected terrorists attacked Ajilari Cross. Call me later for details, please,” he said briefly during a phone conversation.
Residents in nearby communities said the attack triggered panic, as gunshots and explosions echoed across the area while helicopters hovered overhead.
“We were very scared. The whole air was filled with gunshots and explosions. But Alhamdulillah, the situation is calm now and prayers have resumed,” said Bashir Yusuf, a resident of Gomari.
The latest incident comes amid a renewed wave of attacks targeting military positions in parts of Borno State.
Last week, Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, summoned the country’s Service Chiefs to an emergency security meeting.
Following the meeting, the minister briefed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu alongside other top security officials.
Speaking afterward, Musa said the Service Chiefs had agreed on a change in strategy, while the President approved the acquisition of additional military hardware to strengthen ongoing operations against insurgents.
