Borno community urges relocation of Giwa Barracks amid security concerns

Residents of Bale Galtimari in Maiduguri, Borno State, have called for the relocation of the Giwa Military Barracks due to persistent fears of Boko Haram attacks.

The appeal was made during a press conference held by the Bale Galtimari Consultative Forum on Sunday in Maiduguri. Speaking at the event, the forum’s chairman, Zanna Boguma, emphasized that the barracks pose a significant threat to the safety of civilians living in the surrounding communities of Galtimari, Fori, and 122—areas that collectively house over one million residents.

While acknowledging the vital role of the military in maintaining security in Borno State, Mr. Boguma argued that sensitive military installations, especially those used for detaining insurgents, should be situated away from densely populated civilian areas.

He recalled that the Giwa Barracks had previously been targeted by Boko Haram insurgents, with attacks occurring in 2014, multiple times in 2015, and again in 2019—all in attempts to free detained fighters.

He also cited a recent explosion at the barracks’ armoury, which triggered widespread panic across the community, as further justification for the relocation demand.

Mr. Boguma highlighted that the House of Representatives had already taken up the issue, referencing a motion moved by Rep. Satomi Ahmad of Jere Federal Constituency, calling for the barracks to be relocated.

“This is not a political statement,” Boguma stressed.

“It is a genuine plea to safeguard civilian lives and enable the military to function in a more secure and appropriate location.

“Our advocacy will remain peaceful and persistent until action is taken.”

He also praised the Nigerian Armed Forces for their ongoing counter-insurgency efforts and lauded Governor Babagana Zulum for his steadfast dedication to peace and security in the state.
