The Borno State Police Command has confirmed the discovery of the bodies of children locked inside the boot of an abandoned car in Maiduguri.
Commissioner of Police, Nazir Abdulmajid, said officers were dispatched to the scene, where photographs were taken before the bodies were moved to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for autopsy.
He noted that investigators have yet to establish whether the children were kidnapped and murdered or if they suffocated after entering the vehicle on their own.
“For now, we cannot really say what transpired. We have not established that it is linked to any political killing.
“But the autopsy will give the proofs,” Abdulmajid stated.
The circumstances surrounding the incident have sparked outrage across Maiduguri, with residents alleging political undertones.
Commentator Zagazola Makama reported rising tensions, while several locals openly accused politicians of foul play.
On Facebook, Aliyu Haidar Zaifada claimed: “These innocent children’s only crime was being born to an outspoken father who speaks truth to power. This is purely politics.”
Another resident, Hajiya Falmata, described the deaths as “evil,” while Malam Usman, a trader, said: “There was no ransom, no demand. This is politics, and it is dirty.”
A university student, Fatima, voiced community fears: “Today it is Zannah’s children. Tomorrow, it may be someone else’s.”
As Maiduguri mourns, calls for justice grow louder, with demands for accountability and protection of families from what many believe is a politically motivated crime.
For now, investigators await the results of the autopsy to determine whether the tragedy was a case of suffocation or deliberate murder.
