Boye Oyewumi has declared his intention to vie for a senatorial seat to replace the senator representing Ondo South, Jimoh Ibrahim, who was recently nominated for an ambassadorial position by President Bola Tinubu.
Oyewumi is contesting on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Below are things to know about the senatorial candidate:
A proud son of Oke-Igbo, Oyewumi carries with him a legacy of discipline, public service, and community loyalty. His academic journey began at the University of Maiduguri, where he earned a degree in Business Administration, before proceeding to Middlesex University in the United Kingdom for a Master of Business Administration (MBA). These qualifications shaped the business-savvy mindset that later defined his career.
Oyewumi’s political consciousness was awakened early. As a young activist in the 1990s, he joined the historic Hope ’93 presidential campaign of Chief M.K.O. Abiola, standing firmly on the side of democratic values. He later aligned with the NADECO movement, lending his voice to Nigeria’s struggle for the restoration of democracy.
These formative experiences not only strengthened his political ideology but also grounded him in the principles of justice, accountability, and good governance — values that continue to frame his political aspirations today.
Through the 2000s and 2010s, Oyewumi built a formidable profile in the private sector, establishing himself in investment management, enterprise development, and strategic advisory consulting. His reputation as a forward-thinking investor led many to describe him as a “business mogul” capable of transforming the economic fortunes of Ondo State — years before he entered full public service.
His greatest imprint on public administration came when he was appointed the pioneer Chief Executive Officer and Vice-Chairman of the Ondo State Development and Investment Promotion Agency (ONDIPA) from 2017 to 2021.
Ambassadorial nomination: Omokri hails Tinubu, commits to serving Nigeria
Under his leadership, ONDIPA became Ondo State’s leading engine for investment growth and industrialization. Among his landmark achievements:
Creation of the ‘Investors Road Map’, a comprehensive blueprint for economic development
Laying the groundwork for Nigeria’s first commercial bitumen production in Ondo
Spearheading investor engagement for the proposed Ondo Deep-Sea Port — designed to anchor vessels of up to 14,000 TEU
Introducing the visionary ‘Sunshine City’ industrial hub to drive manufacturing and job creation
Positioning Ondo State as a credible destination for local and foreign investors
These accomplishments not only elevated Ondo’s economic profile but also demonstrated Oyewumi’s ability to turn policy into tangible development outcomes.
Oyewumi also serves as the Vice-Chairman of Okitipupa Oil Palm Plc, where he plays a key role in the state’s agro-industrial revitalization efforts. His work has helped strengthen value chains, create jobs, and deepen economic activity within Ondo South.
Despite his technocratic credentials, Oyewumi maintains strong grassroots ties. He is widely regarded as a bridge-builder — someone who speaks the language of both the elite and the everyday citizen.
Ahead of the 2023 election cycle, political observers consistently identified him as a credible candidate to lead Ondo South in the Senate. His supporters argue that what the district now requires is not just a politician, but a development-oriented legislator capable of attracting investment, securing infrastructure, and giving the district a more strategic voice at the national level.

With his unmatched blend of experience in business, governance, and economic strategy, many believe Oyewumi represents a refreshing departure from the old order — a leader with the capacity, intelligence, and humility to deliver truly impactful representation.
As Ondo South considers who should replace Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, the question is no longer whether Oyewumi is qualified. It is whether the district is ready to embrace a new chapter anchored on development, innovation, and accountable leadership.
