Omotayo Abioye, a 40-year-old Nigerian mother of three, has died in the United Kingdom following a battle with breast cancer, leaving behind three children aged 11, nine, and seven.
Abioye died on Sunday, April 5, according to a Friday post on X by Benjamin Kuti, popularly known as Oluomo of Derby and former president of the Nigerian community in the UK, who announced her passing and called on Nigerians at home and in the diaspora to support her family.
“It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved sister, Omotayo Abioye, who departed this life on Sunday, the 5th of April, in the United Kingdom,” Kuti wrote, describing her as “a devoted mother, loving wife, caring sister, cherished aunty, and dear friend.”
He remembered her as warm, generous and full of life. “She loved deeply, laughed freely, and had a beautiful gift for bringing people together whether through her passion for dancing or her warm, welcoming nature,” he said.
Kuti described Abioye as a woman of deep faith who remained joyful and graceful through her illness.
“Her life was a powerful testimony of resilience, strength, and hope,” he said.
The Nigerian community in the UK has launched a fundraising effort to give her a befitting farewell and support her three children.
Kuti shared a GoFundMe link alongside his post, urging the public to contribute.
“No amount is too small. Your support, prayers, and kindness will go a long way in honouring her memory and easing the burden on her loved ones,” he said.
