Buhari family commends Tinubu’s gestures, Nigerians, global leaders’ support during burial

The family of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari has extended heartfelt gratitude to Nigerians and the international community for their overwhelming support during the mourning and burial of the ex-leader.

In a statement signed by presidential spokesperson Garba Shehu, the family, through Malam Mamman Daura—the most senior member of the Buhari family—thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his wife, First Lady Senator Remi Tinubu, for the federal government’s unwavering support before and after Buhari’s passing.

“It is truly comforting to receive such support,” Daura said, noting the personal involvement of Vice President Kashim Shettima, who travelled to the United Kingdom and later to Daura to condole with the family.

The Vice President’s visit, along with those of federal ministers, was described as a source of strength during a time of deep loss.

The family also commended President Tinubu for his “thoughtful gestures,” particularly the declaration of a public holiday and the renaming of the University of Maiduguri in honor of the late president.

The outpouring of condolences from around the world also drew praise from the Buhari family.

“We are grateful to leaders of various countries who either visited, sent representatives, wrote letters or made personal calls,” Daura said, making special mention of King Charles III of the United Kingdom, the United Nations Secretary-General, and top African leaders including the Chairman of the African Union and ECOWAS heads of state.

Former Nigerian Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar was also highlighted for his support.

The family listed a wide range of dignitaries, including Vice President Shettima and his wife, several Nigerian state governors, former governors such as Peter Obi, and former Vice Presidents Atiku Abubakar, Namadi Sambo, Yemi Osinbajo, and Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, as well as National Assembly leaders including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.

Appreciation also went to members of the cabinet past and present, traditional rulers including the Sultan of Sokoto and Shehu of Borno, and emirs from across the country and neighboring states.

The statement acknowledged the massive turnout of citizens, religious leaders of all faiths, community and youth leaders, women’s groups, civil society organizations, the media, and the security community.

The family said it was particularly touched by the presence of notable business leaders like Aliko Dangote, Abdul Samad Rabiu, Muhammadu Indimi, Dahiru Mangal, and Kola Adesina, who paid their respects in person.

“All of Nigeria came out in force to bury Buhari, to condole with us, and to pray for him. We are deeply grateful,” the family said.

Calling the loss of the former president “irreparable,” Daura said the show of unity and solidarity in Nigeria and across the globe has strengthened the family’s resolve to bear the grief with dignity.

“May the Almighty Allah bless and reward you all,” the statement concluded.
