Buhari to be buried in Daura as Tinubu declares national mourning

Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari will be buried in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, following his death in London. Governor Dikko Umaru Radda of Katsina State confirmed the burial plans during an interview with DW Hausa on Sunday.

Governor Radda, who was in London at the time of Buhari’s passing, revealed that he had visited the former president shortly before his death.

“I arrived on Friday to see him. We were preparing to return home when the news of his passing came,” Radda said.

“I have just left his family at the hospital where he died, and it has been agreed that he will be buried in Daura.

“God willing, the body will be flown to Nigeria in the morning.”

He added that the burial is scheduled for Monday, with Nigeria’s Vice President expected to arrive in London overnight to accompany the remains.

Tinubu Summons Emergency FEC Meeting

In response to Buhari’s death, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a week of national mourning and ordered flags to fly at half-mast across the country for seven days.

In a tribute personally signed on Sunday evening, Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Buhari as “a patriot, a soldier, and a statesman.”

“As a mark of respect to our former leader, I have directed that all national flags fly at half-staff for seven days from today,” Tinubu stated.

“I have also summoned an emergency Federal Executive Council session on Tuesday, dedicated to his honour.”

The president praised Buhari’s legacy of integrity and national service, recalling his time both as a military head of state (1984–1985) and as a democratically elected president (2015–2023).

“Duty, honour, and a deep commitment to the unity and progress of our nation defined his life,” Tinubu said.

“He led with quiet strength, profound integrity, and an unshakable belief in Nigeria’s potential.”

He highlighted Buhari’s efforts in tackling corruption and enforcing discipline in public service, stating that the former president consistently put the nation above personal interest.

Tinubu also extended condolences to Buhari’s widow, Aisha Buhari, their children, and the broader Buhari family, as well as the government and people of Katsina State, particularly the Daura Emirate.

“In this moment of national mourning, I extend my deepest condolences to his beloved wife, Aisha, his children, the entire Buhari family, and all who knew and loved him,” the president said.

He assured Nigerians that the late leader would receive full state honours and a funeral befitting his service to the nation.

“May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus,” Tinubu prayed.

“May his life continue to inspire generations to serve with courage, conviction, and selflessness.”
