Bayero University, Kano (BUK), will host an international conference to explore how sustainable governance and green economy strategies can help tackle insecurity, poverty and unemployment in Nigeria and other African countries.
The three-day conference, organised by the university’s Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences (FEMS), will hold from November 3 to 5, 2026, at the FEMS Theatre, CBN Centre of Excellence, BUK.
Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Prof. Kabir Tahir Hamid, disclosed this on Friday during a press briefing in Kano.
The conference, themed “Sustainable Governance and the Green Economy: Strategies for Addressing Insecurity and Promoting Inclusive Development in Africa,” will bring together academics, policymakers, business leaders, government officials and development practitioners.
Hamid said the theme reflected growing concerns over insecurity, poverty, unemployment, environmental degradation, weak institutions and economic instability across Nigeria and Africa.
He said the conference would provide a platform for participants to share research findings, exchange ideas and develop practical solutions to the continent’s governance and development challenges.
“We believe the challenges confronting Nigeria and Africa require collective action, innovative thinking and practical solutions. Universities have a critical responsibility to generate knowledge that informs public policy and contributes to societal development,” he said.

The conference will feature technical sessions, research presentations and a doctoral colloquium designed to strengthen research capacity among postgraduate students and emerging scholars.
Keynote addresses will be delivered by the Chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group, Dr Umaru Kwairanga, and the Director-General of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall, Saleh Abubakar.
Prof. Auwalu Haruna, Director of ABU Zaria Business School, and Dr Elvis Tangam, the United Nations Development Programme’s Climate, Peace and Security Adviser, will present lead papers.
The Chairman of the Bank of Industry, Dr Mansur Muhtar, is expected to chair the occasion, while the Managing Director of Dala Foods, Ali Safiyanu Madugu, will serve as Guest of Honour.
A pre-conference workshop on research methodology is scheduled for November 2 to equip participants with skills in research design, data analysis, academic writing and scholarly publication.
Hamid said the conference was expected to produce policy recommendations on governance, insecurity, climate finance, entrepreneurship, digital transformation and sustainable economic development.
He added that outstanding papers would be considered for publication in the faculty’s and departmental peer-reviewed journals, subject to editorial and review processes.
Participation will be open to researchers, students, policymakers, business executives and development partners, with both physical and virtual attendance options.
