Bayero University Kano has launched an investigation into allegations that one of its students is involved in online impersonation and financial scams.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Director of Public Affairs of the university, Lamara Garba, on behalf of the Registrar.
According to the statement, the university management became aware of allegations circulating in public commentary and on social media linking an individual said to be a student of the institution to acts of online impersonation and financial misconduct.
“The Management wishes to state that Bayero University Kano maintains strict standards of conduct, discipline and character for all students throughout the duration of their studies,” the statement said.
It added that any conduct capable of bringing the institution’s name and reputation into disrepute would be treated with utmost seriousness.
The university also stressed that the personal actions of any student do not represent the values or character of the institution.
“In view of the allegations, the University has commenced a preliminary inquiry to ascertain the facts surrounding the matter. The appropriate University authorities are reviewing the issue in line with the institution’s established rules and disciplinary procedures governing students’ conduct,” the statement noted.
The management further commended the public-spirited efforts of Farooq Kperogi and other individuals who support students in need by assisting with registration fees and other educational expenses.
“Such acts of generosity continue to play an important role in expanding access to education and supporting deserving students,” the statement added.
The university assured the public that if the allegations are substantiated, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with its regulations and applicable laws.
It also urged members of the public to allow the investigative process to run its course and avoid speculation or spreading unverified information.
The probe follows a social media outcry by alleged victims, many of whom are popular social media influencers. They claimed they were approached with emotional appeals, religious references and fabricated stories aimed at gaining sympathy and financial support.
