Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has described four major Federal Government roads in the state as death traps and serious security risks due to their deteriorating condition.
The affected roads are located in Gulani and Geidam Local Government Areas, including the Geidam-Maine/Sorowa road that leads to the Niger Republic border.
Governor Buni raised the alarm during a weekend meeting with members of the House of Representatives Committee on the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), led by Hon. Aderemi Abasi Iseni, at the Government House in Damaturu.
He stressed that the deplorable state of the roads poses a grave danger to both motorists and passengers, urging the Federal Government to prioritise their rehabilitation.
“These roads are not only in terrible condition, they have become death traps for commuters,” Buni said.
“They expose drivers and passengers to increased risk of accidents, mechanical breakdowns, and terrorist attacks from Boko Haram and ISWAP.”
He noted that the poor condition of the roads forces vehicles to slow down or stop, making them easy targets for insurgents and other criminals.
Beyond FERMA’s routine pothole repairs, the governor called for a complete overhaul of the roads to support national efforts in improving transport infrastructure and enhancing security in Yobe and its border communities.
In response, Hon. Iseni said the House Committee was in the state as part of a nationwide oversight and assessment tour.
He assured the governor that the identified roads would be considered in FERMA’s upcoming intervention projects.
