The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has paid tribute to the late Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, describing him as a symbol of courage and humanity for saving 262 Christians during a violent attack in 2018.
In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the association said the cleric’s selfless actions at a time of great danger remain a lasting testament to bravery, compassion, and interfaith solidarity.
Archbishop Okoh noted that the Imam’s conduct would remain etched in Nigeria’s history of interfaith relations, stressing that his decision to protect innocent lives at personal risk stood as a powerful example of moral courage.
“The late Imam Abubakar Abdullahi will forever be remembered for his rare bravery and selflessness. By choosing to stand on the side of humanity, he saved 262 Christians during a violent massacre in 2018, demonstrating that the value of human life transcends all differences,” Okoh said.
CAN stated that the Imam’s actions went beyond the immediate rescue of lives, adding that they helped to bridge religious divides and promote peace.
“His heroism did more than save lives; it reinforced hope, strengthened interfaith harmony, and reminded our nation that peace is achievable when love, conscience, and faith guide our actions,” the statement added.
The association recalled that the late cleric was honoured during CAN’s Sapphire Anniversary celebrations in 2021 in recognition of his exceptional service to humanity.
“While awards may fade, his legacy will endure as a shining example for religious leaders, communities, and future generations,” CAN said.
CAN also urged Nigerians and relevant authorities to continue to honour the Imam’s memory through public recognition and engagement with his family, noting that his story should serve as an inspiration for unity, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence.
The association extended its condolences to the Imam’s family, community, and all those inspired by his life, praying that his legacy would continue to promote peace and understanding across the country.
