Canada issues 10 tips to help applicants avoid immigration delays

The Canadian government has released 10 guidelines aimed at helping travellers, prospective immigrants and citizenship applicants avoid common mistakes that could delay the processing of their applications.

The advice, shared by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) on its official X account, encourages applicants to submit complete and accurate applications while complying with all documentation requirements.

According to the agency, applicants are advised to complete and submit their applications online, as the digital platform helps identify missing information before submission.

The government also urged applicants to answer every question on application forms and indicate “Not Applicable (N/A)” where a question does not relate to their circumstances.

Applicants were further advised to use the official document checklist provided for each immigration programme to ensure all required documents are included.

IRCC said documents not written in English or French must be translated by a certified translator before submission.

The agency also cautioned applicants to submit only the documents requested, noting that original copies should not be sent unless specifically required.

It stressed the importance of ensuring passport photographs meet the prescribed specifications before submission.

The government further advised applicants to declare all family members in their applications, even if they are not travelling or immigrating to Canada.

Applicants were also encouraged to provide accurate contact information, including an active email address and complete mailing address, to facilitate communication throughout the application process.

In addition, IRCC urged applicants to sign and date all required forms, pay the correct application fees through approved payment channels, and respond promptly to any requests for additional documents or information before the stipulated deadline.

According to the Canadian government, following the guidelines will help reduce processing delays, minimise application errors and improve the overall efficiency of immigration, travel and citizenship applications.

The 10 recommendations are:

2. Answer every question on the application form and write “N/A” where a question does not apply.
3. Use the official document checklist for your immigration programme to ensure all required documents are included.
4. Translate all documents not written in English or French using a certified translator.
5. Submit only the required documents and avoid sending original copies unless specifically requested.

7. Declare all family members, even if they are not accompanying you to Canada.
