‘Cancer touches us all’: Biden speaks after diagnosis

Former United States President Joe Biden has expressed his gratitude for the goodwill he has received following the announcement of his cancer diagnosis.

Biden said he and his wife, Jill, like so many others, had found that they were strongest in the most difficult times.

The former president said this in a post on X on Monday, May 19, 2025.

He posted a photo of himself smiling at the camera, sitting by his wife, holding a cat in her arms.

“Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places. Thank you for lifting us up with love and support,” Biden stated.

Biden was diagnosed with an “aggressive” form of prostate cancer.

A statement issued by his office on Sunday, May 18, said the cancer has spread to Biden’s bones.

Biden diagnosed with prostate cancer

The statement said the 82-year-old former president was diagnosed with the cancer after he experienced increasing urinary symptoms and was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule on Friday, May 16.

“While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management. The President and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians,” the statement added.

This is not the first cancer diagnosis in Biden’s family.

In 2015, his eldest son, Beau, died of a brain tumour at the age of 46.

Biden has spoken often about the loss in speeches.
