China’s Consul General in Lagos, Yan Yuqing, says trade between Nigeria and China has grown to $20 billion in 2025, reflecting the deepening economic ties between both countries.
Yuqing highlighted the milestone during the 2025 edition of the Annual Schools’ Quiz and Debate Competition organised by the Ogun–Guangdong Free Trade Zone (OGFTZ) at the Community Civic Centre in Igbesa.
She said the rising trade volume underscores the need for China to strengthen cultural and educational exchanges with Nigeria.
Describing the competition as a vital cultural bridge, the envoy said it plays a key role in youth development and in fostering long-term China–Nigeria relations.
She commended the OGFTZ for pairing industrial growth with initiatives that support education in its host communities.
Yuqing also encouraged participating students to continue learning the Chinese language, noting that such skills could position them as future ambassadors of China–Nigeria cooperation.
The event was organised by China-Africa Investment FZC in partnership with Wema Bank, Stanbic IBTC and several enterprises within the zone.
Speaking at the event, the Oloja Ekun of Igbesaland, HRM Oba Abdulazeez Akinde—represented by HRM Engr. Teslim Nasiru—urged students to stay committed to their studies, describing them as “leaders of today.”
He applauded China-Africa Investment FZC for sustaining programmes that promote quality education.
General Manager of China-Africa Investment FZC, Mr Zhao, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to community development, praising teachers for their dedication and noting that the company’s support extends beyond the annual competition.
Wema Bank’s Business Development Manager, Abiodun Agbetola, also restated the bank’s commitment to youth empowerment and educational initiatives.
As part of the day’s activities, 18 public schools in Igbesa and Ejila-Awori received modern mowing machines to improve their learning environments.
