The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria has launched an investigation into reports that a Chinese mining company allegedly abandoned Nigerian workers in the Central African Republic (CAR).
In a statement issued Friday in Abuja, the Embassy said the probe was triggered by a viral social media video showing Nigerian miners claiming they had been deserted by the Chinese firm.
“The Embassy attaches great importance to this incident and has initiated an immediate investigation to verify the facts,” the statement read.
It emphasized that the Chinese government consistently requires all Chinese businesses and nationals operating overseas to comply strictly with local laws and regulations.
“The Chinese side will urge the company involved to handle the issue responsibly,” the Embassy stated, adding that it will continue to engage with Nigerian authorities to ensure the protection of the legal rights and welfare of citizens from both countries.
