The United States has introduced new visa restrictions on some Nigerians accused of undermining religious freedom.
The U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, announced this via a post on X on Wednesday, December 3, 2025.
According to Rubio, the restrictions will apply to individuals who “knowingly direct, authorize, fund, support, or carry out violations of religious freedom.”
He noted that the move underscores Washington’s commitment to confronting abuses and holding perpetrators accountable.

He wrote: “The United States is taking decisive action in response to the atrocities and violence against Christians in Nigeria and around the world. The Department of State will restrict U.S. visas for those who knowingly direct, authorize, fund, support, or carry out violations of religious freedom.
“This visa policy applies to Nigeria and other governments or individuals that persecute people for their religious beliefs.”
