Tensions are rising in Nigeria’s political arena as the scheduled unveiling of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) by a coalition of opposition forces was abruptly disrupted following a last-minute cancellation of the event venue by hotel management.
The event, which was to be held at the prestigious Wells Carlton Hotel and Apartments in Abuja, was reportedly cancelled unilaterally by the hotel’s management, less than 24 hours before its commencement. In a statement issued to event organizers, the hotel cited an “internal compliance matter” as the reason for the decision.
“Due to an internal compliance matter that has just come to our attention, we are unable to proceed with hosting your scheduled event,” the hotel said in a notice to the coalition group.
The management acknowledged the short notice and apologized for the inconvenience caused.
However, insiders allege the cancellation was prompted by fear of political backlash from operatives of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as an intimidation tactic against opposition activities.
Reacting to the development, Salihu Lukman of People and Passion Consult Ltd., a key facilitator of the event, issued a strongly worded response condemning the hotel’s actions.
“This is unacceptable. Your management has no right to unilaterally sabotage a contract validly and legally agreed to and fully paid for,” Lukman said.
“You must meet the terms of the contract fully by allowing the event to be held with full compliments of all the services agreed to. This is not negotiable.”
Lukman further accused the hotel of yielding to political pressure, calling the action a blatant suppression of democratic engagement.
Despite the setback, organizers of the opposition coalition said the event would proceed, with or without the original venue.
They reaffirmed their commitment to challenging the APC and promoting a credible alternative ahead of future elections.
“The intimidation of the opposition by a jittery government will not succeed.
“Our resolve remains firm, and this cowardly act only strengthens our determination,” one coalition member told reporters.
The sudden cancellation is the latest in a series of incidents raising concerns about the shrinking space for political opposition and freedom of association in Nigeria.
Political observers say such developments threaten the integrity of the country’s democratic process.
