COAS deploys additional 850 troops to Plateau

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has approved the deployment of 850 additional troops to Plateau State to reinforce ongoing security operations and address escalating tensions in several communities.

The fresh deployment is intended to bolster troops already operating under Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) as security forces work to restore calm and safeguard residents in affected areas.

Security sources said the reinforcements, drawn from military formations in Abuja and Kaduna, have been assigned to protect lives and property while enhancing the overall security posture of the state.

Speaking at the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force Operation Enduring Peace in Jos, Lt.-Gen. Shaibu urged the troops to remain professional, disciplined and focused on their mandate.

He stressed the need for firm but accountable engagement with criminal elements undermining peace.

“The troops must maintain a high level of professionalism and discipline while carrying out their mandate.

“You are here to protect innocent citizens and restore confidence in the security architecture,” he said.

He assured the personnel that adequate logistics and operational support had been provided to enable them to execute their mission effectively.

Shaibu reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to working closely with other security agencies and the Plateau State Government to tackle evolving security threats and stabilise troubled communities.

The deployment comes as security forces intensify efforts to calm tensions and restore law and order in parts of Jos and surrounding areas following recent violence.l
