The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, on Thursday led a high-level team of security chiefs to Plateau State for an on-the-spot assessment of the security situation, reaffirming the military’s commitment to restoring lasting peace.
The visit comes as security forces intensify operations to stabilise parts of Jos and neighbouring communities affected by recent violence.
On arrival in Jos, Lt.-Gen. Shaibu was received by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, in what many observers described as a clear display of strengthened civil-military cooperation aimed at tackling emerging security threats.
The COAS was later briefed by the General Officer Commanding 3 Division and Commander of Operation Enduring Peace, Maj.-Gen. Folusho Oyinlola, who outlined ongoing operations and coordinated efforts with other security agencies to curb attacks, protect civilians and restore normalcy.
Addressing residents, Shaibu assured the public of the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to protecting law-abiding citizens. He urged compliance with the imposed curfew, vigilance, and the provision of credible information to aid ongoing operations and investigations.
He also held engagements with community leaders, stressing that achieving sustainable peace requires joint efforts from security agencies, government, and residents.
“The Nigerian Army remains committed to working closely with other security agencies and stakeholders to ensure Plateau is safe and secure for everyone,” he said.
Chairman of Jos North Local Government Area, Mr. Dachung Bagos, commended the COAS for the timely visit, saying it would boost public confidence. Similarly, the Councillor representing Naraguta ‘B’ Ward, Mr. Ladi Dangyok, lauded the swift intervention, describing it as reassuring to affected communities.
Security analysts say the visit signals a coordinated approach by the Armed Forces and key stakeholders, combining operational strategies with community engagement to address the evolving security landscape in the state.
The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its resolve to sustain collaboration with the Plateau State Government and other partners to confront security challenges and strengthen peace across the region.
