There was tension and confusion in Ekpoma, Edo State, after a corpse was reportedly declared missing from a hospital mortuary, triggering outrage among residents and the family of the deceased.
According to the family, the body of their uncle had been deposited at the mortuary while burial arrangements were being finalised.
Trouble began when they returned to collect the corpse and were informed by mortuary officials that it could not be found.
The situation escalated when mortuary attendants allegedly presented a different body, already dressed and placed in a coffin, claiming it belonged to the family.
The relatives, however, rejected the claim, insisting that the body was not that of their uncle.
A video circulating on social media shows a distressed family member calling for urgent intervention and describing the incident as unprecedented.
She appealed to the Edo State Government and relevant authorities to step in and help resolve the matter.
In the video, the woman lamented that the family deposited their relative’s body at the mortuary but returned to find it missing, accusing the mortuary staff of attempting to pass off another corpse as their own.
As of the time of filing this report, the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the corpse remain unclear, and the hospital management has yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
