ECOWAS

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has declared a state of emergency across the sub-region following a surge in coups, attempted mutinies, and escalating political instability.

The ECOWAS Commission President, Omar Touray, made the announcement on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, during the 55th session of the Mediation and Security Council in Abuja.

Touray said the recent uprisings underscore the need for “deep reflection on the future of our democracy and urgent investment in the security architecture of the region.”

He warned that the growing unrest threatens not just national governments but the collective stability of West Africa.

The emergency declaration signals a coordinated regional response as ECOWAS moves to strengthen security cooperation and safeguard democratic governance.
