Court adjourns case against Joshua’s driver to January 20

A Magistrate Court in Sagamu has adjourned until January 20, 2026, the case involving Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, the driver of the Lexus SUV linked to the crash that claimed the lives of two close associates of boxing star Anthony Joshua.

Kayode, 46, was arraigned on Friday following his arrest by the Ogun State Police Command.

Police spokesperson DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi confirmed the adjournment in a statement issued in Abeokuta.

The accident occurred on December 29, 2025, near Danco, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

The crash led to the deaths of 36-year-old Kevin Latif Ayodele, a British-Nigerian, and 36-year-old British citizen, Sina Ghami — both members of Joshua’s training team.

Kayode, a long-time logistics staff member of Joshua’s Nigerian entourage, was treated for minor injuries in Lagos before being taken to Abeokuta for questioning.

Police sources earlier suggested that excessive speed and a burst tyre during an overtaking attempt may have contributed to the crash, which also involved an illegally parked truck.

Investigators indicated that Kayode could face charges related to reckless driving, although full details of the charges filed on Friday were not immediately made public.

Anthony Joshua and Kayode sustained minor injuries and were treated at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi.

A joint statement from the Lagos and Ogun state governments later confirmed Joshua’s discharge and revealed that he and his mother visited a funeral home to pay their respects before the bodies of the deceased were flown to London via Istanbul for burial arrangements.

Governors Dapo Abiodun and Babajide Sanwo-Olu thanked the public for their concern and praised medical personnel for the care provided.

They also expressed condolences to the bereaved families.

The driver of the truck reportedly left the scene and is currently being sought by police as investigations continue.

Authorities say more information will be made available after the January 20 court sitting.
