Court jails four for internet fraud in Lagos

Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos State, on Thursday, sentenced one Paul Owodu to six months imprisonment for internet fraud.

Justice Taiwo sentenced Owodu after he pleaded guilty to the allegation of internet fraud brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Earlier, the EFCC counsel, M. Hussain, told the court that the defendant was arrested in Lagos State by the operatives of the anti-graft agency on September 15, 2021.

He stated that the items recovered from the defendant include one Honda Accord with Registration number LMD66OG, one iPhone, and a Apple laptop.

The prosecutor added that fraudulent documents were printed from the devices recovered from the defendant.

Justice Taiwo, therefore, ruled that the recovered items be forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria, while the defendant was sentenced to six months imprisonment with an option of N250,000.

Similarly, the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, the Lagos State capital, has sentenced one Tobi Emmanuel to six months imprisonment for internet fraud.

Emmanuel was sentenced to imprisonment by Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo on Thursday.

The defendant, who pleaded guilty to the one count charge bordering on internet fraud, was arrested by operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in October 2021.

The EFCC counsel, S.O Daji, told the court that one iPhone 12 Pro Max and a Mercedes Benz C 300 were recovered from the defendant.

In her judgment, Justice Taiwo sentenced the defendant to six months imprisonment with an option of N250,000, adding that the recovered items be forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Also sentenced to six months imprisonment with an option of N250,000 by Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos State, on Thursday, include one Azeez Adeboye.

Adeboye was sentenced following the allegation of internet fraud brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The defendant, according to the EFCC counsel was arrested by the operatives of the anti-graft agency October 8, 2021.

He told the court that Adeboye was arrested at Conference Hotel in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

In another development, the Special Offences Court in Ikeja, on Thursday, sentenced one Mayowa Jacob to six months imprisonment for his alleged involvement in internet fraud.

Jacob was sentenced by Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo after the defendant’s arraignment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

According to the prosecuting counsel, E. Teraje, the items recovered from the defendant include one iPhone XR and one HP laptop, adding that Jacob also made a statement that he had in possession N500,000 he made from the internet fraud.

The prosecutor further tendered fraudulent documents which were printed from Jacob’s gadgets to the court, noting that the documents were earlier acknowledged by the defendant.

The presiding judge, Justice Taiwo, who found the defendant guilty as charged, sentenced Jacob to six months imprisonment with an option of N250,000.

Justice Taiwo added that the recovered items and the sum of N500,000 made from the internet fraud by the defendant be forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
