A Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled January 7 for its ruling on the bail applications of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), his wife, Bashir Asabe, and his son, Abubakar Abdulaziz.
Justice Emeka Nwite fixed the date after lawyers representing the defendants, led by Joseph Daudu (SAN), and counsel for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ekele Iheanacho (SAN), presented their arguments in court.
In the case marked FHC/ABJ/CR/700/2025, the EFCC charged Malami, his wife, and son with money laundering. The Commission alleged that they carried out suspicious transactions and tried to hide the source of billions of naira through various bank accounts and property purchases in Abuja, Kano, and Kebbi.
According to the EFCC, the alleged offences took place between 2015 and 2025, covering the period when Malami served as Attorney-General under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The defendants are accused of conspiring to conceal funds believed to be proceeds of unlawful activities, indirectly acquiring assets, and retaining such funds — offences said to violate the Money Laundering (Prohibition and Prevention) Acts of 2011 (as amended) and 2022.
