Crude oil emerged as the dominant commodity handled across Lagos ports in August 2026, with total imports reaching 2.39 million metric tonnes.
Available port data showed that 1,867,712 metric tonnes of crude oil arrived at the Lekki Deep Sea Port during the first week of August, while an additional 524,742 metric tonnes was scheduled for discharge at the Lagos Apapa Quays before the end of the month.
The combined volume placed crude oil well ahead of other commodities recorded at the ports during the period.
Bulk wheat ranked second on the import chart, with a total of 321,849 metric tonnes. Of this figure, 176,243 metric tonnes was recorded during the first week of August, while another 145,606 metric tonnes was expected later in the month.
Aviation fuel also featured prominently, with 118,000 metric tonnes recorded, while bulk fertiliser accounted for 44,000 metric tonnes.
Other major petroleum products recorded during the period included Automated Gas Oil, commonly known as diesel, and Premium Motor Spirit, or petrol.
Data as of August 10 showed that 1,525,612 metric tonnes of crude oil had been brought into the country through the ports for onward distribution.
Aviation fuel accounted for 245,600 metric tonnes, while AGO recorded 104,000 metric tonnes during the period.
Bulk urea also featured on the import chart, with 99,000 metric tonnes recorded.
Meanwhile, the Lekki Deep Sea Port handled 25 vessels involved in import shipments during the first 10 days of August.
Although no containerised cargo was recorded at the Lekki Port during the period under review, the volume of bulk commodities handled underscored the continued importance of Lagos ports to Nigeria’s import and distribution network.
The figures further showed the continued dominance of crude oil and other petroleum-related products among commodities arriving through the country’s major Lagos ports.
