Delta: Police redeploy DPO, launch investigation into alleged ₦2.5m extortion

The Delta State Police Command has ordered the redeployment of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Jesse, CSP Chidi Nwabuzor, following allegations of extortion involving two other officers at the station.

The action comes after a viral video surfaced showing a woman claiming that the DPO, along with officers Bright and Usman, demanded the sum of two million, five hundred thousand naira (#2,500,000) to secure the release of her younger brother, Israel Onojeruo, 20, who was in custody.

According to the Police Command, the incident traces back to 1st January 2026, when the youth leader of Jesse community handed over suspects to the police, including Israel Onojeruo.

Onojeruo was arrested following a confession from another suspect, Okoro Desmond, who admitted selling a gun to him. The suspects were subsequently transferred to the State Anti-Cult Unit (SACU) for further investigation.

In response to the extortion allegation, Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Aina Adesola, a known community-focused officer, immediately ordered the AC X-Squad to investigate.

The constable identified as Bright in the video has been detained at the command headquarters, while the DPO has been redeployed to headquarters pending the outcome of the investigation.

The CP explained that the DPO’s removal is also in response to prior complaints of extortion and unprofessional conduct.

CP Adesola reassured the public that any officer found guilty of misconduct would face decisive action under the Police Act and regulations.

He urged citizens to report any police misconduct to the command’s complaint response unit through the following numbers: 09011112311, 09155570008, 09064308018, and 09066575187.

SP Edafe Bright, Police Public Relations Officer, signed the statement on behalf of the Delta State Command.
