Nigeria’s Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, has strongly criticised former US President Donald Trump for describing Nigeria as “a disgraced country,” calling the remark offensive, undiplomatic, and a violation of international norms.
Trump made the comment during a White House press briefing, where he also warned that he would “take decisive action” if reports of killings of Christians in Nigeria continued.
In a viral video released on Friday, Jibrin condemned the statement and urged Trump to withdraw his words and apologise to Nigeria.
“For the president of the United States to say, ‘Nigeria is a disgraced country,’ and to threaten military action is completely unacceptable,” Jibrin said.
“He must understand that diplomacy requires respect. We expect him to retract that statement and apologise to our nation.”
The Deputy Senate President emphasised that Trump’s threat violated diplomatic protocol and international law.
“It’s against international law for any leader to issue threats of attack without due process,” Jibrin stated.
“If there are concerns, the proper channel is through the United Nations and international diplomacy, not unilateral threats.
“That approach is not only unlawful — it’s un-American.”
Addressing a crowd of supporters, Jibrin reaffirmed Nigeria’s sovereignty and resilience.
“Nigeria will not be intimidated by such rhetoric,” he declared.
“We will always stand for the truth and demand respect from all nations, no matter how powerful.”
He called on the United States to prioritise dialogue and mutual respect in its dealings with Nigeria, stressing that diplomacy remains the cornerstone of peaceful international relations.
