Hon. Umar Haruna Doguwa has returned as chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Kano State, emerging at the party’s state congress held in the early hours of Wednesday.
Doguwa was affirmed by delegates from the 44 local government areas through a voice vote at the congress, which was supervised by the Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Kano, Ambassador Zango Abdu.
The chairmanship position had earlier been zoned to Kano South Senatorial District, Doguwa’s constituency. He succeeds Abdullahi Abbas, who led the party in the state for 10 years.
A former state APC chairman during the second term of ex-governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Doguwa recently stepped down as Commissioner for Water Resources in the cabinet of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf ahead of the congress.
In his valedictory speech, outgoing chairman Abdullahi Abbas described the congress as a milestone for the party. He expressed gratitude to party members and key leaders, including former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and Governor Yusuf, for their support during his tenure. He also sought forgiveness from anyone he may have offended and called on members to rally behind the new leadership.
Chairman of the State Congress Committee, Rabiu Suleiman Bichi, disclosed that 2,420 accredited delegates took part in the exercise, noting that the presence of INEC officials reinforced the credibility of the process.
Other executives affirmed at the congress include Salisu Majje Ahmed Gwangwazo as Deputy Chairman; Prof. Yusuf Mohammed as State Secretary; Nura Yaro as Assistant Secretary; Abdul Adamu (SAN) as Legal Adviser; Bashir Yusuf as Assistant Legal Adviser; Farouq Abdullahi Garo as Financial Secretary; Salisu Yahaya as Youth Leader; Musadiq Wazari as Assistant Youth Leader; Abubakar Salisu as Auditor; and Hajiya Fatima Abdullahi Dala as Women Leader, among others.
The newly elected officials were subsequently sworn in before party leaders and stakeholders.
Governor Yusuf congratulated the new executives and urged them to strengthen the party and advance its agenda in Kano State.
