Authorities in Kano State have confirmed the tragic death of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Rano Division following a violent clash between residents and the police.

The incident occurred after protests erupted over the reported death of a suspect, Abdullahi Musa, who was said to have died in police custody after being arrested a day earlier.

The protest, led predominantly by angry youths, escalated into violence, resulting in an attack on the Rano Police Station.

According to the spokesperson of the Kano State Police Command, SP Haruna Abdullahi Kiyawa, the DPO sustained critical injuries during the attack and was rushed to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where he later died.

During the chaos, two vehicles were set ablaze, and ten others were vandalized. Two individuals also sustained gunshot wounds amid the violence.

SP Kiyawa further disclosed that 27 suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident. He added that the situation is now under control and normalcy has been restored to the area.

The Police Command extended its condolences to the family of the deceased DPO, who, in their words, “paid the supreme price in the line of duty.”

Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and refrain from taking the law into their own hands, assuring that a thorough investigation is underway.
