Driver dies as mob razes BRT bus in Lagos

A commercial bus driver has been confirmed dead in an accident involving his bus and a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) vehicle in Ogudu, along the Oworonshoki expressway, Lagos.

It was gathered that the accident occurred on Wednesday after the commercial bus, which was coming from Lagos Island and heading to the Ojodu Berger area of Lagos, collided with the BRT.

The bus driver was said to have lost control of the vehicle along the Ifako Bridge, collided with the BRT, and somersaulted twice.

It was further learned that the driver of the commercial bus died on the spot.

The incident was said to have drew the anger of hoodlums in the area who vandalised and set the BRT ablaze.

Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, in a statement issued by its Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, disclosed that seven passengers were also injured in the accident.

Taofiq stated: “While other emergency responders including Traffic Police Officers supported officials of LASTMA at the accident scene, on hearing of the death of the commercial driver whose body was lying beside the upturned commercial bus, hoodlums in the area set ablaze the bus belonging to the Lagos State Bus Service Limited.

“The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Bolaji Oreagba, however, warned members of the public particularly street urchins not to take laws into their hands at any accident scene but to allow appropriate authorities to do the needful.”

Also speaking on the incident, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, in a statement issued by its Director, Margaret Adeseye, said: “The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has combated vehicular Fire accident at Ifako Bridge outward third mainland, Ogudu, Lagos.

“The accident which was reported at 09:33 hours, Wednesday while Alausa Fire crew raised down to the scene which involved a commercial 14-seater volkswagen bus and a BRT bus ensuing in Fire.

“Operational firefighting commenced in earnest after which a male adult recovered and handed over to the Police from Ogudu Division.

“The casualty who is the driver of the commercial bus was riding alone while the BRT and his assistant escaped with minor injury.”

“The remains of the vehicles are being cleaned off the expressway just as men of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority are managing the traffic in the meantime,” the statement read.
