The Edo State Government has demolished a bungalow and other buildings allegedly linked to ritual activities and cult-related crimes following the arrest of two suspects, including a man accused of attacking three women, one of whom reportedly died.
The demolition was carried out on Wednesday by the Edo State Special Security Squad, the police and other security agencies as part of the state government’s renewed crackdown on criminality.
The bungalow and four boys’ quarters at Uwalor-Oke in Uromi, Esan Central Senatorial District, were allegedly used by suspected ritualist Ebhata Eromosele. Another building linked to cult-related activities in Ewatto was also demolished.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, the coordinator of the Edo State Special Security Squad, Amiolemen Idemudia, alleged that Eromosele used the Uromi property for ritual activities.
He said security operatives recovered a bloodstained bedspread and other items suspected to be evidence of criminal activity during a search of the premises.
“A lifeless body that was killed and dumped was traced by the Edo State Security Corps to this bungalow apartment used by the suspect,” Idemudia said.
He added that the search uncovered items that investigators believed could link the suspect to ritual activities and alleged organ harvesting.
The Zonal Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, SP Johnson Oyameda (retd.), said the suspect’s arrest followed more than a month of surveillance.
According to him, security operatives intensified their monitoring after a mutilated woman’s body was recovered from a drainage, with another similar incident reported less than two weeks later.
Oyameda said operatives subsequently tracked Eromosele to the bungalow over suspected links to the incidents.
He alleged that three women were attacked in separate incidents, leaving one dead. Another victim, who was hospitalised, has been discharged, while the third is still receiving treatment.
In a separate operation, the authorities demolished a property belonging to Bright Ejetuwamen, whom Idemudia accused of being at the centre of a cult-related crisis in Ewatto.
The security coordinator said Ejetuwamen had also been arrested.
Idemudia said Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration would not spare properties allegedly used to facilitate criminal activities.
Both suspects are being held by the Edo State Police Command for further investigation and prosecution.
