Edo governor suspends revenue collection

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has ordered the suspension of the collection of all revenues, especially in motor parks and other areas of the state until further notice.

This was announced in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to Edo State Governor, Fred Itua, on Wednesday, November 13, 2024.

Itua, who said the suspension was with immediate effect, quoted Okpebholo as directing the Edo State Commissioner of Police to arrest anyone who flouts the order.

He added that the newly sworn-in governor would soon review the issues surrounding the collection of revenues in Edo State and decide on the way forward.

Itua said: “The collection of revenues in Edo State has been suspended indefinitely. Anyone seen collecting revenues on behalf of the state government will be arrested.

“The Commissioner of Police is hereby ordered to arrest anyone who flouts the order and collects any kind of revenues on behalf of the state government.

“The governor will soon address the issues and concerns raised. He will issue new directives soon. Until then, no one is authorised to collect revenues on behalf of the state government.”

Okpebholo: What I’ll do as Edo governor

Okpebholo was sworn in as the fifth democratically elected governor of Edo State on Tuesday, November 12.

His swearing-in at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin, the Edo State capital, was graced by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Shettima was joined by some governors elected on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The APC governors were Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Hope Uzodimma (Imo), and Ahmad Aliyu (Sokoto), among others.

The APC National Chairman, Dr Umar Ganduje, and the senator representing the Edo North Senatorial District, Adams Oshiomhole, were also present at the event.

Okpebholo took his oath of office alongside his running mate, Dennis Idahosa, at about 12:55 p.m., and thereafter rode in an open van around the stadium, waving to cheers from supporters.
