A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has died after allegedly slumping in a hotel room following an encounter with a 21-year-old commercial sex worker in Edo State.
The incident occurred on Sunday at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area.
The lecturer reportedly checked into the hotel with the woman, identified as Angela Defa Jacob, before he later became unresponsive in the room.
The Edo State Police Command said three people have been arrested in connection with the incident.
Police spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said the command received a report on October 5 that Uwuigbe had lodged at the hotel and engaged the services of the woman.
According to her, the lecturer sent Jacob out to buy water, but she returned to find him lying dead inside the room.
“The command received a report that Matthew Uwuigbe, a lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, had lodged at a hotel in Ekpoma and engaged the services of a 21-year-old sex worker, Angela Defa Jacob,” Ikoedem said.
She said the hotel owner, manager and Jacob were arrested and are assisting the police with the investigation.
Uwuigbe’s remains have been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary, the police said.
The university confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of its staff but stressed that the incident occurred outside the institution.
“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life. The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution,” the university’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, said.
Police said investigation into the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death is ongoing.
