The Edo State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Mr. Agun Gbenga, has died after reportedly slumping during an official function in Benin City.
The incident occurred on Thursday at the Bishop Kelly Pastoral Centre, off Airport Road, where Gbenga had attended an event organised by the International Association of World Peace Advocates (IAWPA).
Witnesses said the commandant collapsed shortly after delivering his goodwill message at the gathering. Efforts to revive him at the venue proved unsuccessful, after which he was rushed to the Military Base Hospital in Benin.
Medical personnel at the hospital later confirmed him dead.
The development has thrown the Edo State NSCDC Command and the wider security community into mourning.
