EFCC arrests officer behind Obiano’s leaked video

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it has arrested the officer who leaked the video of the immediate past governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, in the Commission’s custody.

The EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, made this known in a statement on Monday.

Uwujaren stated that the officer was arrested after a discreet investigation revealed that he was the EFCC operative behind the leaked video of Obiano.

The statement read: “The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has been drawn to a trending video showing the former Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, in the custody of the commission.

“The commission wishes to distance itself from the said video which is completely at variance with the established Standard Operating Procedure of the EFCC.

“A discreet investigation ordered upon discovery of the leak has revealed the errant officer behind the odious act and he is currently being subjected to appropriate disciplinary action,” the EFCC spokesperson stated.

The Star had reported that a video of Willie Obiano in the custody of the anti-graft agency surfaced online on Sunday.

In the clip, the ex-governor of Anambra State was seen drinking bottled water and talking to a yet-to-be-identified man.

Obiano, who is under investigation over alleged misappropriation of N42 billion belonging to Anambra State, was arrested last Thursday at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos on his way to Houston, United States.

The former governor was arrested hours after handing over to the new Anambra Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo.

The anti-graft agency said Obiano had been on its watch list for months but the immunity enjoyed by sitting governor prevented his arrest.

EFCC had requested the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to provide information on the former governor’s movement out of the country from airports, or other points of exit from the country.
