El-Rufai family alleges rights violations during ICPC detention

The family of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has accused the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) of allegedly violating his rights while he remains in detention.

In a statement signed by his son, Hon. Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, the family claimed that on May 15, 2026, officials of the commission denied El-Rufai access to his personal doctor and also prevented the delivery of his evening meal.

According to the statement, the former governor’s doctor visited the ICPC facility at about 3:00pm to review medical test results but was allegedly refused access. The family said officials insisted that approval from the ICPC Chairman was required, despite what they described as a court order granting unrestricted medical access.

The statement further alleged that at about 7:00pm, El-Rufai’s wife was turned away while attempting to deliver food, with ICPC personnel reportedly citing an internal rule restricting food deliveries after 6:30pm.

Describing the actions as a violation of constitutional and human rights, the family argued that such restrictions undermine the rule of law and exceed the limits of lawful detention. They called on the commission to fully respect court directives and ensure access to medical care and basic family support.

The ICPC has yet to respond publicly to the allegations.

El-Rufai, a former two-term governor of Kaduna State and a prominent political figure, is currently in ICPC custody over undisclosed investigations.
