The senator representing Enugu East Senatorial District, Kelvin Chukwu, has defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Chukwu’s letter of defection was read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary in Abuja on Wednesday, October 7, 2025.

The senator hinged his decision on what he described as the collapse of internal democracy and the tattered nature of the LP.
Akpabio, who congratulated Chukwu, said Nigeria will not be a one-party state as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will register more parties.
With the latest development, APC now has 73 senators in the Senate, PDP – 28, LP – 4, NNPP – 1, SDP – 1, and APGA – 2.
