EPL: Haaland’s winner fires Man City past United in Manchester derby

Manchester City claimed local bragging rights after Erling Haaland scored a dramatic late winner in a fiercely contested derby victory over Manchester United on Sunday, with the decisive goal surviving a lengthy Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review.

The match was overshadowed by controversy after officials ruled Haaland’s goal onside despite debate over the involvement of City midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who was in an offside position during the move.

The decision sparked discussion over the interpretation of the offside law, with VAR concluding that Fernandez did not interfere in a manner that warranted disallowing the goal.

United came agonisingly close to taking control of the encounter, striking the woodwork twice through Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford, but failed to convert their chances.

The derby also produced drama in the first half when City midfielder Phil Foden was shown a straight red card for lashing out at United captain Bruno Fernandes.

Despite finishing the match with 10 men, Enzo Maresca’s side held on to secure a crucial victory, with Haaland’s contentious strike proving the difference in a pulsating Manchester derby.
