The European Union has pledged €300 million to support new development projects in Nigeria’s North-West and North-East regions, reinforcing its commitment to fostering stability, prosperity, and partnership with the country.
EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, announced the pledge during the 2025 Europe Day celebration in Abuja.
He highlighted the EU’s dedication to working with Nigeria towards building a more sustainable, equitable, and rule-based global order.
“Since my arrival last September, I have witnessed concrete progress in our partnership,” Mignot said.
“Through the EU Global Gateway strategy, we are creating more opportunities for Nigerians — especially women and youths — via these new €300 million projects in the North-West and North-East.”
He emphasized the importance of strengthening trade and investment ties, noting that the EU remains Nigeria’s top partner in these areas.
“In today’s fast-evolving world, the EU is a reliable and stable ally for Nigeria, just as Nigeria is for us,” he added.
Mignot also underlined the EU’s ongoing collaboration with ECOWAS and efforts to bolster relations with the African continent.
He announced that EU foreign ministers would convene in Brussels to prepare for the upcoming EU-AU summit, which will also commemorate 25 years of strategic partnership.
Nigeria’s Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu, expressed gratitude for the EU’s support, praising the impact of EU-funded empowerment initiatives that have addressed youth restiveness and promoted education.
“Our shared values—peace, solidarity, mutual respect, and sustainable development—form the foundation of this long standing relationship,” Bagudu said.
“The EU’s support in regions like the Niger Delta and North-East has been instrumental in restoring livelihoods and promoting youth engagement.”
Bagudu further affirmed that the EU remains a key partner in Nigeria’s developmental goals, particularly in areas aligned with the National Development Plan 2021–2025 and President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
