Barely five months after unveiling a massive orphanage and elderly care home in Mgbirichi, Imo State, Evangelist Chukwuebuka Anozie Obi has launched another landmark project — Nigeria’s first-ever free psychiatric hospital.
The N600 million facility, built under the Seraphic Homes Foundation, the charity arm of his Zion Prayer Movement Outreach, was inaugurated on Friday in Aguleri, Anambra East Local Government Area, by Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo.
The hospital is designed to provide full psychiatric care — including diagnosis, treatment, medication, rehabilitation, accommodation, and welfare — completely free of charge to patients and their families.
According to Evangelist Obi, the facility will begin operations next month, with dedicated vehicles moving across Anambra to rescue mentally challenged individuals from the streets and bring them in for care.
“This has been my childhood vision,” Obi said.
“I have travelled across the world, and you will not find mentally ill people roaming the streets in developed countries.
“It is only here that this happens, and we must change it.”
He further revealed plans to extend similar projects to Enugu, Ebonyi, Abia, Rivers, and other states across Nigeria, in continuation of his mission to uplift vulnerable groups.
Governor Soludo, who hailed the initiative as a groundbreaking intervention, pledged full government support.
He promised to construct the access road to the hospital, link it to the national power grid, and provide financial assistance, stressing that such a facility offering free mental healthcare deserved to be sustained.
The Seraphic Homes Foundation described the project as a turning point for Nigeria’s healthcare and social support system, where “love, faith, and compassion work hand in hand with medical science to transform lives.”
Obi added: “Our vision is to create a society where the mentally challenged are no longer abandoned but treated, rehabilitated, and empowered to live meaningful lives.”
