Ex-gov’s aide reveals alleged bandit payments, cattle deals in Zamfara

A former aide to the Zamfara State government, Musa Muhammad Kamara, has come forward with explosive claims implicating elements of the previous administration in dealings with notorious bandits in the state.

Kamara spoke out in response to a recent defamation lawsuit filed against journalist Malam Murtala Bello Assada, who had linked former Governor Bello Muhammad Matawalle—now Nigeria’s State Minister of Defence—to bandit groups.

In a video statement, Kamara said he was compelled to speak after seeing the case online.

He admitted that some of Assada’s allegations were true and claimed personal involvement in certain transactions during the Matawalle administration.

Kamara alleged that vehicles were purchased and delivered to top bandit leaders, including Bello Turji, Kachalla, and Ado Alero.

He also claimed that he handled a contract to buy 28,000 bags of animal feed, known locally as “dusa,” which was funded by contributions of ₦3 million from each local government, totaling ₦42 million.

Kamara said the money was deposited into his personal account and used to procure the feed for distribution to bandits.

He further supported claims that a notorious bandit leader, Haru Dole, who was reportedly arrested with 500 rifles, was released following government intervention led by Dr. Bashir Maro, then Chairman of the Hospital Services Management Board.

Kamara confirmed that a house was purchased for Bello Turji and that he personally oversaw the transaction.

He also alleged that he managed an ₦88 million contract to purchase cattle from bandits for distribution during Sallah celebrations.

According to Kamara, the cattle were bought at ₦140,000 each and handed to citizens at ₦50,000, with an additional ₦10,000 allocated for transportation.

He described an incident in which a man attempted to reclaim his stolen cattle during transport, but the animals were eventually handed over to the former Commissioner for Security, Abubakar Dauran, instead of the rightful owner.

Kamara concluded by urging Assada to include him as a witness in court, asserting that he is ready to testify.

Authorities have not independently verified Kamara’s statements.

The defamation case against Assada continues, and the allegations have intensified scrutiny over the previous administration’s handling of security and banditry in Zamfara State.
