Ex-Punch editor Oketola appointed INEC chairman’s chief press secretary

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan SAN, has appointed veteran journalist Adedayo Eriye Oketola as his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), signaling a renewed focus on transparency and media engagement within the Commission.

The appointment was confirmed in a letter signed by Mrs. Rose Oriaran-Anthony, Secretary to the Commission, dated October 24, 2025.

Oketola, a multi-award-winning journalist with nearly 20 years of experience, previously served as Editor of The Punch Newspaper, one of Nigeria’s leading national dailies.

Known for his investigative depth and editorial excellence, he brings extensive newsroom experience to his new role in Nigeria’s top electoral body.

INEC officials described the appointment as part of a broader effort by Prof. Amupitan to strengthen communication and public trust ahead of several upcoming elections.

“Oketola’s professional record and credibility make him an ideal fit for this strategic role,” Oriaran-Anthony said.

“We expect him to uphold the integrity and transparency for which the Commission stands.”

Observers note that Oketola’s appointment comes at a critical period when clear, credible communication has become central to countering election misinformation and building voter confidence.

Media analysts say his transition from newsroom leadership to public service reflects a growing trend of media professionals being tapped to manage strategic communication in public institutions.
