Explosion rocks Kubwa, shakes buildings

An explosion at a roadside gas vendor’s shop near Liberty Junction in Kubwa, Abuja, on Sunday morning sent panic through the area, with the blast shaking nearby buildings and overturning a traffic warden’s booth.

The explosion, which occurred in the early hours, was reportedly heard across parts of Kubwa, including Dantata Estate, where residents said the impact caused buildings to vibrate.

A resident said the blast was strong enough to wake people from their sleep as residents rushed to find out what had happened.

“The explosion was loud enough to wake people from their sleep, and we could feel the buildings shaking. Everyone was wondering what had happened,” the resident said.

A video circulating online showed thick smoke rising from the area as residents and passersby gathered around the scene.

Fire service operatives were also said to have responded to the incident after residents reported hearing sirens in the area.

The cause of the explosion remained unclear as of the time of filing this report. While some residents suspected that gas cylinders or other flammable materials could have triggered the blast, the claim could not be independently verified.

It was also unclear whether the incident resulted in any deaths or injuries.
