The family of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has alleged that an Abuja court refused to issue a Production Warrant required to bring him from the Sokoto Correctional Facility to the Federal Capital Territory to finalise his appeal documentation.
Kanu’s younger brother and family spokesperson, Emma Kanu, told our correspondent on Thursday that although the Federal High Court in Abuja issued a summons directing Kanu to appear on November 28 for the settlement of records in his appeal, it declined to grant the mandatory order enabling prison officials to transport him to Abuja.
A Production Warrant authorises correctional authorities to move an inmate from custody to court.
According to Emma, “A production warrant is required for Sokoto Prison to bring him (Nnamdi Kanu) to Abuja, but the Court declined to issue it.”
The summons, signed by the Principal Registrar I of the Federal High Court, Ojonugwa Thomas, referenced Charge No. FHC/ABJ/CR/383/2025 between Kanu and the Federal Government and directed all parties to appear before the Appeal Section of the court on November 28 at 11:00 a.m. to settle the Record of Appeal in line with the Court of Appeal Rules, 2021.
Copies were also served on the DSS detention facility and on the Federal Government through its counsel.
Emma Kanu urged the judiciary to issue the Production Warrant to ensure his brother is physically present in Abuja for the proceedings.
Kanu is currently serving a life sentence handed down by Justice James Omotosho of the Abuja High Court on November 20 following his conviction on multiple terrorism-related charges.
He was transferred to the Sokoto Correctional Facility after the judgment.
The court imposed life imprisonment on counts one, two, four, five, and six; 20 years without an option of fine on count three; and five years without an option of fine on count seven.
The charges stemmed from his secessionist activities, alleged acts of terrorism, membership of a proscribed group, killings of security operatives, destruction of public facilities, concealment, and importation of an unregistered radio transmitter.
