Farmer rescues newborn baby buried alive in Kebbi

A farmer, Kabiru Kamba, has been hailed for rescuing a newborn baby girl found buried alive in his farmland in Kamba, Dandi Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

Narrating the shocking discovery on Monday during a visit by the Kebbi State Gender-Based Violence Technical Working Group, Kamba said the incident occurred last Friday when he noticed a strange mound of soil while working on his farm.

“Out of curiosity, I stopped some passing motorcyclists to help dig it up,” he said. “We found a wrapper buried beneath the soil, which made me suspicious. I quickly alerted the police at a nearby checkpoint. They dug further and found a baby girl, miraculously alive and crying, wrapped in cloth.”

Kamba said he immediately took the baby home and offered to care for her while the police investigate.

“It was purely an act of humanity. I didn’t do it for any reward,” he said. “Luckily, my wife had just given birth, so feeding the baby has not been a problem.”

He revealed that preparations were underway for a naming ceremony scheduled for Wednesday, adding that he had already bought a ram and other necessary items.

Kamba’s wife expressed her joy and willingness to raise the rescued child. “I felt happy when my husband brought the baby. I will care for her like my own,” she said.

During the visit, the team led by former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry for Basic and Secondary Education, Hajiya Rafa’atu Hammani, commended the farmer’s compassion and promised to inform the state’s First Lady, Hajiya Zainab-Nasare Idris, for further support.

The Secretary of the Technical Working Group, Alhaji Nasiru Idris, applauded the police for launching an investigation and expressed gratitude for the child’s survival. The delegation also presented essential items for the baby, including clothes, diapers, soap, a mattress, powdered milk, a mosquito net, and a baby bed.
