Fayose slams PDP faction’s U.S Embassy protest, calls it “last kick of a dead NWC”

Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has condemned Thursday’s protest by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the United States Embassy in Abuja, describing it as “a shameful last kick of a dead National Working Committee (NWC) of tax collectors.”

In a strongly worded statement, Fayose said the suspended PDP National Chairman, Umar Iliya Damagum, and his allies should have taken their protest to the White House in Washington if they believed the U.S. was responsible for resolving internal party issues.

He faulted the faction’s attempt to involve foreign governments in what he called a self-inflicted crisis, asking rhetorically, “since when has it become the duty of the United States or any European country to fix a political party in Nigeria?”

Fayose accused Damagum and his team of “political undertakers” of disregarding the PDP constitution and plunging the party into chaos.

He noted that a court ruling last Friday directed the party to conclude outstanding state congresses before convening its next national convention — a process he said the embattled NWC has failed to comply with.

“Instead of returning home to take stock and bring stakeholders together, they went ahead to announce the suspension of key NWC members, including the National Secretary, who alone is constitutionally empowered to issue notices of meetings,” Fayose said.

He further criticized the group for engaging in internal court battles over the party’s legal representation, despite clear constitutional provisions assigning that responsibility to the National Legal Adviser.

“So how are the consequences of their impunity the business of the U.S. or anyone else?” he queried.
