Teachers in primary and secondary schools across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have suspended their indefinite strike and are expected to resume work on Wednesday, October 21, following resolutions reached with the FCT Administration.
The suspension was announced in a communique issued after an emergency meeting of the State Executive Council of the FCT chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), held on Friday, October 16, at the Labour House, Abuja.
The communique, obtained by our correspondent late Tuesday, said the decision followed consultations, interventions and reconciliation meetings with the FCT Administration over the issues that prompted the industrial action.
The union said the resolutions addressed teachers’ promotion, the 2025 promotion examination and the redeployment of officers benefiting from the harmonised retirement age for teachers.
On promotions, the NLC said vacancies for education officers would be determined by establishment positions declared by the Education Secretariat. It added that the expected exit of several directorate staff would create opportunities for eligible officers to move to higher positions.
The union also said the FCT Civil Service Commission would be notified of the Executive Council’s approval of the 2025 promotion examination, with a new date to be announced for eligible candidates.
However, the issue of redeploying officers enjoying the harmonised retirement age for teachers back to the classrooms was deferred pending further directives.
The NLC said it would establish a monitoring committee to ensure that the resolutions were implemented within the agreed timelines.
It warned that failure to implement any of the resolutions would trigger an automatic resumption of the strike without further notice.
The communique stated, “In view of the resolutions and in the spirit of social dialogue and industrial harmony, the SEC has resolved to suspend the indefinite strike with immediate effect.”
It added that all workers, particularly FCT teachers, were directed to resume work on Wednesday, October 21.
Teachers in primary and secondary schools across the FCT’s six area councils, under the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), began the indefinite strike on Wednesday, October 7, following a directive from the FCT NLC.
The industrial action followed the alleged failure of the FCT Administration to meet the teachers’ demands, including the provision of vacancies as a condition for promotion and other outstanding issues.
