The Federal Government has attributed the delay in the payment of February salaries to treasury-funded workers to a technical glitch, announcing that disbursements have now commenced nationwide.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) confirmed that payments to affected workers began on March 2, 2026, after resolving the issue that disrupted the salary schedule.
According to the statement signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Bawa Mokwa, the delay was caused by a technical hitch, which has since been fixed. The office also assured workers that measures have been put in place to prevent a recurrence.
The clarification followed growing concerns among federal workers over the late payment of their February salaries, which are typically credited before the end of the month.
The OAGF further provided an update on outstanding wage awards, revealing that part of the arrears had been cleared. It disclosed that approval had been received and the process concluded for the payment of one month’s wage award arrears out of the three months currently outstanding.
The wage award was introduced by the Federal Government as a temporary measure to cushion the effects of economic reforms and rising living costs on public sector employees.
Last week, organised labour under the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (Trade Union Side) issued a deadline to the Federal Government, demanding the immediate release of funds to settle three months’ unpaid wage awards and other pending allowances across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.
In a letter addressed to the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, the union leadership warned that failure to meet the February 27, 2026 deadline would force the eight unions in the civil service to take decisive action.
The unions had alleged that while relevant agencies were ready to process payments, funds had yet to be released by the Ministry of Finance.
