FG has not introduced vehicle tax — NRS

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has debunked reports claiming that the Federal Government has introduced a new tax on vehicles, describing the information as false and misleading.

The clarification follows the circulation of a viral infographic on social media alleging that a vehicle tax would take effect from July 1, 2026, and urging vehicle owners to make payments through online platforms and designated financial institutions.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the agency’s spokesperson, Dare Adekanmbi, said the notice did not originate from the Service or any authorised government body.

“The attention of the Nigeria Revenue Service has been drawn to a viral message claiming that the Federal Government has introduced a fresh vehicle tax effective July 1, 2026,” he said.

“The NRS wishes to state categorically that the information did not emanate from the Service or any government agency.”

Adekanmbi explained that the misleading message was designed to deceive the public, noting that it was falsely branded with the Federal Government logo to appear credible.

He also pointed out inconsistencies in the graphic, including the use of an incorrect website address, which further undermines its authenticity.

The agency urged Nigerians to disregard the claim and rely only on official government communication channels for accurate information on tax policies and directives.

It also advised the public to verify any tax-related information through its recognised platforms and avoid acting on unverified messages circulating online.

The NRS reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, assuring that any legitimate policy changes would be properly communicated through official channels.
